With Spring ISD schools and offices closed April 18-20 due to widespread flooding throughout the Northwest Houston area, we’ve compiled some useful information and answers to questions you might have as students return to school Monday, April 25.

What have you done to prepare for students to return to school?
 
Our maintenance team has visited every campus, and thankfully, there is no major damage to any of our schools or facilities. Our transportation team has traveled the district and determined that most bus routes are passable and buses will make every effort to safely access regular bus stop locations.
 
 
Now that school is back in session, if a student is still unable to attend school due to safety or transportation concerns, will the absences be excused?
 
Yes, absences due to flood-related issues will be excused. Please notify your campus as soon as possible.

 

 
Will these excused absences affect a student’s perfect attendance qualifications?
 
No, excused absences related to flooding will not count against perfect attendance requirements.
 
 
What if my family was impacted by the flooding?
 

Spring ISD families and staff that need assistance due to the widespread flooding should reach out to their campus. Several of our campuses have collected and distributed water, food, clothes, hygiene products and cleaning items to families that need assistance.  School leaders will help direct you to resources here in our community and in surrounding areas.

Families who experienced home/residential flooding can report this information to the county by visiting: www.readyharris.org/go/survey/1829/11787/
 
Those who live in the city of Houston limits should call 3-1-1 or use the 3-1-1 app on your phone. Reporting structural flooding to 3-1-1 is the only way for the City of Houston to know that you experienced a problem. After making the report, you will be given a Service Request Number (SR#). Make sure you write it down. If you need further assistance, please either call my office at 832-393-3010 or email us at districta@houstontx.gov with the SR#. 
 
 
 
Will we have to make up the missed days?
 
 
Based on TEA Commissioner Mike Morath’s waiver for Houston area schools affected by flooding, the 2015-16 Spring ISD instructional calendar, combined with one makeup day available — Friday, May 27, we have enough instructional time to cover the missed days. However, a final decision on a revised calendar will be communicated as soon as possible.

Please note: The district has decided to use the early release day scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, to make up some of the missed instructional time. Students and staff should plan for a full day of school on April 27.

 
 
Will the days missed have any impact on the STAAR testing schedule, graduation, or final exam testing?
 
No.
 
 

 

Will canceled events and activities be rescheduled?
 

Each campus is evaluating the canceled events and activities to determine when missed events can be rescheduled. Please contact the appropriate campus or department for specific questions.
