Spring High School student musicians show off their GRAMMY award.
Award and $5,500 Check Presented During Ceremony May 10
HOUSTON – May 11, 2016 – Spring High School was recently named a GRAMMY Signature School for its music education program – one of only 13 schools in the nation to receive the honor. Out of that select group, eight schools received a GRAMMY Signature Schools Enterprise Award valued at $5,500.
Representatives from the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy – Paul Wall, Texas Chapter of The Recording Academy president, and Ricky Anderson, Texas Chapter Board of Governors and Entertainment lawyer – presented the award May 10 to Spring High School music directors and students just prior to the Spring High Pop Show.
“This is a great honor for Spring High School,” said Joe Clark, Spring ISD director of performing and visual arts. “The school has been named a semi-finalist twice before, but this is the first time they have advanced to finalist and received an award from the GRAMMY Foundation. The application and judging process, which are rigorous, included recorded performances by vocal and instrumental groups and soloists. It truly represents the entire music program.”
David Landgrebe, Spring High choir director, said the $5,500 contribution to Spring High School’s music program will be used to help students with limited financial means be able to fully participate in the music program, including contest fees, student workshops and master classes for music ensembles.
Criteria for the award includes financial need, goals for continual improvement, creative strategies for enhancing the program, a plan for expanding the program, excellence demonstrated by performing groups, and community support.
The GRAMMY Foundation – a non-profit, charitable arm of The Recording Academy – supports music education through programs such as GRAMMY Signature Schools. More than 20,000 public high schools in the United States have the opportunity each year to apply for consideration as a GRAMMY Signature School. For more information visit GRAMMYintheSchools.com.
