Spring ISD elementary students collect their free book at the Winter Wonderland literacy event.
HOUSTON – Dec. 16, 2016 – Over 800 Spring ISD elementary school children and their parents enjoyed an evening of free holiday fun featuring arts and crafts, reading, storytelling and entertainment during the second annual Winter Wonderland literacy event on Dec. 15 at Dekaney High School.
A highlight of the event, held right before the start of winter break, was the free book giveaway. Every child went home with a brand-new, gift-wrapped book to enjoy over the holidays.
“We want reading to be a joy for our students,” said Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, Spring ISD chief academic officer. “What better way is there to foster a love of reading than to wrap it up and give it as a gift?”
In addition to the brand new book, students were given the opportunity to play in the “snow” and have their picture taken with Santa Claus. Community partners including Texas Children’s Hospital, Cabo Dental, Harris County Public Library, Houston Area Community Centers and Texas Health Steps also provided information for families.
The event was underwritten by the Spring ISD Education Foundation and generous donations from the Spring community.
