HOUSTON – Feb 24, 2017 – Spring ISD’s community partnerships were on full display at the district’s annual Career Connections Expo event at the Spring ISD Learning Center. Busloads of high school seniors arrived to meet with area employers to talk a little business.

Students interacted with employers who had set up displays and tables to showcase their businesses. Senior Jamesya Hasan came looking to collect information about long-term career possibilities, but also checked on summer educational opportunities with a Lone Star College representative.

“It’s a great opportunity. They have applications you can fill out, and they have a lot of information for you. They can help get you to where you want to be,” said Hasan.

The event focused on careers and work opportunities, but there were also people talking about professional certifications that students can consider earning. College counselors from the district’s high schools were on hand and gave additional presentations about college admission and financial aid. They also discussed the qualities employers look for in job applicants.

The goal was for students to take away ideas for their future, whether they discovered information about a new career possibility, or made some new connections in a career pathway about which they had already made a decision. Many of the students had worked on their resumes with their high school counselors and were able to interview for job opportunities while at the event.

Cynthia Williams, Spring ISD Career and Technical Education director, said they had initially registered about 25 businesses, but were able to accommodate several more.

“We have great support from our business partners in the Spring community – from our advisory board members to the people who come into the school to speak to students – and just about anyone we reach out to. The ongoing support they show for our CTE programs makes successful events like today possible,” said Williams.
