HOUSTON – March 27, 2017 – Spring Break wasn’t really a break for some Spring High School students. Rather than sleeping in or taking a vacation with their friends or family, about 20 students from the grammy-award winning Spring High Band rehearsed and later performed three times with international recording group Pink Martini and the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall.
“The performance was designed to be a surprise for audience members as the students joined the concert during the group’s final song, ‘Brazil.’ Once the students were on the stage, the audience was on its feet, dancing, clapping and cheering. It was great feedback and an awesome way for students to see their work immediately appreciated,” said Dr. Joe Clark, director of Spring ISD’s performing and visual arts program.
In addition to this special performance, Spring High School’s band is the focus of the Houston Symphony’s 2016-17 High School Residencies presented by Occidental Petroleum. The residency program allows students to learn more about symphonic music, expand music as an essential element of the school community and motivates them to continue playing their instruments with the highest of musical goals.
About Pink Martini: Featuring a dozen musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America and North America.
