HOUSTON – May 4, 2017 – The Spring Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a 2017-18 Instructional Calendar at the Board Work Session on May 4. The calendar will have Spring ISD students starting classes next school year on Aug. 17 with the last day of school for students on May 31. The district recently achieved a District of Innovation designation, which allowed flexibility in choosing an earlier start date for the school year.
“Two options were presented to Spring ISD staff and community in a survey for feedback before being presented to the board for review and approval,” said Lupita Hinojosa, Spring ISD chief of school leadership and student support services.” The calendar chosen was Option A – which received approximately six percent more votes than Option B in the stakeholder survey.”
The Spring ISD Advisory Committee on Education (ACE), which includes both staff and community members, reviewed and recommended the two calendar proposals that were presented to the community for input. State guidelines require school districts to provide at least 75,600 instructional minutes, and the new calendar exceeds that requirement by 960 minutes.
