HOUSTON – Oct. 19, 2018 – Hundreds of students, parents and staff members turned out on Thursday for the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Northgate Crossing Elementary School, which showcased the history of Spring ISD’s northernmost school, highlighted the student-centered traditions and recognized the important role that community support has played in the school’s success.

According to Principal Kristi Brown, it was appropriate for the school to open its celebration with students front and center, performing the pledges of allegiance and entertaining the capacity crowd with several rousing songs, including the alma mater penned 10 years ago by Laura Mills, Northgate Crossing music teacher.

“Here at Northgate Crossing our students have always been the center of our day,” said Brown.

Brown was the school’s assistant principal when Northgate Crossing first opened in August 2008 under the leadership of Debbie McIver, who was on hand to share her own fond memories of the school.

Although McIver was principal during the construction of the building – she actually laid some brick in the preschool area – she said the building didn’t come alive until the students, parents and the “wonderful staff” walked through the doors.

“As a staff we decided that we wanted this to be a place where kids would be happy and safe. Where they would thrive, not just here, but they would learn to thrive outside of these walls. We made our decisions on what would be best for kids,” McIver said.

Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson acknowledged both McIver and Brown for laying the foundation for the school’s success. “Today, 10 years later, we’re still celebrating the greatness of what has happened here at Northgate,” Watson said.

Unlike most Spring ISD campuses, the school was not named for an individual, but for the Northgate Crossing neighborhood served by the campus. They chose the Navigator for their mascot and have worked side-by-side with their community to ensure that all students have what they need to be successful.

Board of Trustees President Rhonda Newhouse thanked everyone – the administration, staff, students, parents and community – for their commitment to educating students.

“This school truly is a beacon of learning in the community,” Newhouse said. “We are pleased that the light of learning will be even brighter in this area of our district starting next August when Middle School #8 opens across from this campus.”

Several “graduates” of Northgate Crossing were in the audience, but one former student in particular, Caleigh Dauth, spoke from the podium about the excitement she felt starting her second-grade year in a brand new school. Dauth, who currently serves as Spring High School Student Council President, will graduate this year.

“These students are way more than just test scores to us, they are our future. We are proud of all the students who have passed through our doors at Northgate and we look forward to the students yet to come,” Brown said.
