HOUSTON – Feb. 28, 2019 – A total of 250 young women from across Spring ISD high schools will have the opportunity to come together with young women and female community leaders to take part in a female empowerment event, hosted by neighboring school district Aldine ISD.
According to Aldine ISD, the I Am Beautiful–Female Empowerment Summit event aims to inform and challenge 500 young women to become leaders, high achievers and change agents in schools and communities. Guest speakers will share personal stories of accomplishments, failures and overcoming hardships to encourage students how to make a positive impact in their community.
“We’re excited to be able to partner with Aldine ISD to offer this event for our young women in high school,” said Dr. Rodney Watson, Spring ISD superintendent. “This will be a great opportunity for them to hear from accomplished women in the Houston area who understand how to navigate professional and personal challenges.”
Each participating student from Spring ISD has been selected by their high school counselors to take part in the free, invitation-only event. Attendees can expect a full day of interactive workshop activities, panel discussions, and sessions focusing on building healthy relationships, increasing self-esteem, health and wellness, and college and career readiness.
The event will feature guest speakers and panelists from the Houston-area, including Aldine ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, Aldine ISD Board Trustee and founder/CEO of Young Ladies of Elegance Dr. Kimberley Booker, as well as Ashley Turner, Executive Director of Community Relations at Lone Star College and First Daughter of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner; Kim Roxie, Founder & CEO of LAMIK Beauty; and Chelsea Davis-Bibb, Professor of English at Lone Star College-University Park.
