HOUSTON – April 10, 2019 – The Spring ISD Fun Run Committee presented $13,500 in scholarship money at the Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday to be given to Spring ISD students heading off to college.
The proceeds from the March 23 Fun Run and Wellness Fair are being distributed in three $4,500 checks to the Spring ISD Education Foundation, the Spring ISD Career and Technology Education Advisory Board, and Spring ISD Future Educators “Grow Your Own” program.
Held for the second year, the Spring ISD Fun Run and Wellness Fair drew nearly 400 participants and dozens of community and business partners for an event that raised thousands of dollars for student scholarships and celebrated fitness and health.
“We are very pleased to be able to present these checks in support of our Spring ISD students,” said Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. “These three organizations do so much each year on behalf of our students, and we’re happy to be able to help, especially as our Fun Run keeps growing.”
The $13,500 raised in scholarship money marked a significant increase over the first fun run held in 2017-18 that raised $10,000. Watson credited the overwhelming community support for the boost.
The scholarship dollars come just in time for students heading off to university in the fall. Human Capital and Accountability Officer Dr. Tameka Williams-Bruce said the funds presented to the Future Educators program will be distributed to four students at a special event on April 23.
“This scholarship money will help students who are going to university to become educators, so it’s a really nice way to support these young people who we hope will return to Spring ISD classrooms to teach,” Williams-Bruce said. “We’re grateful to the Fun Run Committee and to the entire Spring ISD community.”
The Spring ISD CTE Advisory Board will also be presenting scholarship checks to three students, thanks to the Fun Run.
“We are using the proceeds to create a named scholarship that we will be presenting at our annual luncheon on April 26,” said Cynthia Williams, Spring ISD Career and Technical Education director. “We are very glad the fun run has been so successful because it just means we have more money to support our students. We rely on generous donations like this to fund our scholarships.”
Planning is already underway for the 2019-20 Fun Run and Wellness Fair, which is scheduled for March 28 of next year.
Watson encouraged everyone to save the date and start training for an event that he said would be even bigger and better.
