HOUSTON – April 3, 2019 – Spring ISD elementary schools will hold their Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Round-up and Registration – using online registration for the first time – April 29-May 3 at all Spring ISD Elementary Schools. Times vary to allow flexibility for parents and their children: April 29 and May 1, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; April 30 and May 2, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and May 3, 7:30 a.m. to noon.
Parents can save time by using the New Student Online Registration now available by filling out the online registration before going to the Pre-K and Kindergarten Roundup. Parents will still need to go to their child’s zoned campus to complete the registration process.
“Studies show that early childhood programs play an important role in a child’s development,” said Chief of School Leadership and Student Support Services Dr. Lupita Hinojosa. “We are pleased to be able to provide solid and proven prekindergarten instruction to children during this crucial time in their education.”
The round-up is for children who will be four years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019 and meet Texas Education Agency eligibility requirements. To enroll in kindergarten, children must be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019. Children who are currently enrolled in Spring ISD prekindergarten will be automatically enrolled in kindergarten without needing to participate in the round-up.
Full-day prekindergarten classes are offered at Clark Primary, Anderson, Heritage, Lewis, Link, Smith and Thompson elementary schools, while half-day programs are available at all other Spring ISD elementary schools to students who are eligible because they meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Be unable to speak and comprehend the English language;
- Be educationally disadvantaged, which means a student eligible to participate in the national free or reduced-price lunch program;
- Be homeless, as defined by 42 United States Code (U.S.C.) Section 1143a, regardless of the residence of the child, of either parent of the child, or of the child’s guardian or other person having lawful control of the child;
- Be the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who is ordered to active duty by proper authority;
- Be the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty;
- Be in, or have been in, the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) following an adversary hearing held as provided by Section 262.201, Family Code;
- Be the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas Award as a peace officer, firefighter, or emergency medical first responder.
Any child who lives within the district’s boundaries and will be five years old by Sept. 1 is eligible for the district’s full-day kindergarten. Parents are highly encouraged to register their students if they are not currently enrolled in the district’s Pre-K program. Registration for kindergarten is voluntary, but once a child enrolls, he or she becomes subject to the compulsory attendance law, requiring a student to be in attendance at least 90 percent of the days that school is in session.
To apply for prekindergarten or register a child for kindergarten, a parent or legal guardian must be with the child and present all of the following items:
- Certified copy of birth certificate or passport.
- Current immunization record signed by a physician or physician’s designee.
- Proof of residence in the Spring ISD attendance zone. An original lease/mortgage agreement, and water, natural gas, or electric bills are acceptable.
- Social Security card. If not available, the student will be assigned a State ID number.
- Legal guardian’s Texas driver’s license or Texas Department of Transportation identification card. If the parent or guardian does not have a Texas driver’s license or a TxDOT ID card, other photo ID will be considered in combination with a birth certificate.
- Most recent report card and withdrawal form from previous school, if applicable.
“We are excited about introducing our new online registration during this year’s Pre-K and kindergarten roundup,” said Hinojosa. “This will be our first time using the new system, which is expected to make the process easier and more efficient.”
Families who have access to the Internet, may go to www.springisd.org/roundup to fill out the online registration form and then bring the summary with them – along with required documentation listed above – to the roundup. Computers and assistance will be available at the campuses for those families who need it.
For more information about registration, special needs and/or other specific questions call the campus where your student is zoned.
