HOUSTON – Aug. 7, 2019 – Spring ISD has been forced to delay the opening of the district’s new football stadium because of construction setbacks related to weather.
The new stadium had been expected to open by the end of August, in time for the start of the new football season. The new opening date is now projected by mid-October.
“We knew last fall’s heavy rains were going to pose a challenge to the schedule,” said Chief Operations Officer Mark Miranda. “But over the past seven months, the teams working on the project made a tremendous push to make up for lost time. It’s become clear, though, that there just aren’t enough hours in the day to complete all the finishing work by the end of August.”
The district’s new stadium is being built on a 117-acre parcel of land at 23802 Cypresswood Drive and is slated to replace the 51-year-old Leonard George Stadium adjacent to Spring High School. The new facility will feature a low-glare turf field with seating for 8,000 fans, a state-of-the-art video scoreboard system, great views from every seat, family-friendly concessions and modern press box amenities. A special feature of the project is a memorial to honor the sacrifice of area service members.
“We are tremendously excited about the new stadium, and we know that it will be well worth the wait,” Miranda said. “Our goal is to build a modern facility that will last for generations to come, so we know it’s worth taking the time to get everything right.”
With the delayed opening of the new stadium, plans are underway to start the football season one last time in the district’s Leonard George Stadium.
Spring ISD Athletics Director Willie Amendola noted that although there was a lot of excitement around the opening of the new stadium, all the players and coaches will be prepared to kick off a great season regardless.
“We’re going to provide an exciting football experience no matter the venue because we have some of the most talented players in Texas at Spring, Dekaney and Westfield High Schools,” he said. “This delay getting into the new stadium won’t deter our coaches and athletes from having a great season.”
