HOUSTON – Nov. 6, 2019 – Unofficial election results indicate that incumbent Spring ISD Trustees Deborah Jensen and Justine Durant each were able to secure another three-year term on the board with newcomer Kelly P. Hodges winning her seat in an uncontested bid. They will be sworn into office in December after the official election canvass later this month.
The Harris County Clerk’s Office reported that Jensen retained Position 1 on the board by securing nearly 65 percent of the votes against her challenger Mechelle Epps. Jensen has served on the board for nine years.
For Position 2, Hodges ran uncontested for a seat being vacated by Trustee Chris Bell, who decided to not seek re-election after serving two terms on the board. Hodges will officially assume her new position at the Dec. 10 board meeting.
The contest for Position 3 was a three-way race with incumbent Durant securing 48 percent of the vote. The remaining votes were split between challenger John Lopez with 28 percent and Ernest (Saul) Thomas with nearly 24 percent.
Unlike some other elected offices, the Spring ISD Board of Trustees elections are decided by plurality vote, so the winning candidate only needs to get more votes than a challenger to win.
