HOUSTON – Nov. 7, 2019 – Spring ISD’s Advanced Academics department will host its annual fall G/T Expo at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School.
The biannual event occurs in the fall and spring, and highlights the district’s Gifted and Talented program. Students from all grade levels will showcase a multitude of projects through presentation boards, working models and laptops to illustrate their research projects.
“The G/T Expo gives scholars an opportunity to showcase their interest, creativity, passion, and research,” said Tiffany Williams, Director of Advanced Academics. “We have so many talented students in Spring ISD and this event provides a way to bring all of that brain power into one space. It’s truly inspiring to be a part of the event.”
The expo follows months of preparation for participants, who were asked in August to complete a student profiler through Renzulli Learning – an interactive online system – to identify their strengths and learning styles.
Students then worked with their teachers to identify a topic of interest to pursue, using the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP). Scholars use the TPSP tool and Renzulli Learning to research and develop their project for the expo. In years past, topics have varied across all subject areas, and students have used a wide array of materials to present their research.
One unique aspect of the G/T Expo is the community and district volunteers who turn out for the event and move among the exhibits, while interacting with the students and asking questions about their research.
“All of our schools are invited to showcase between three and 10 projects at both the fall and spring expos, Williams said. “The G/T Expo celebrates creativity and leadership and allows our G/T students to showcase both their academic skill set as well as their social-emotional capacity to audiences outside of the school setting.”
As a part of the district’s five-year strategic plan, Every Child 2020, Spring ISD has been strengthening its Gifted and Talented program to expand enrichment opportunities for students across the district. An additional G/T Expo is scheduled to return in Spring 2020.
