HOUSTON – April 22, 2020 – The 69th Annual Spring Livestock Show and Sale is going online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-bidding on student projects will start April 27 and run through May 2, when the event will close with a virtual live auction at 12 noon.
More than 130 entries, representing a year’s worth of work by the students who are involved in FFA, Family Career and Community Leaders of America and Spring 4-H, will be up for auction including livestock, arts and crafts, welding and woodworking projects.
“This is a way for our students to get a little money back for their projects,” said Courtney Musterman, Spring Tri-Club president.
Students rely on the money they raise each year at the annual sale to purchase their next year’s project and help with college expenses, if they are a graduating senior.
Jasmine Moynihan, a senior and FFA president at Spring High School, will have a steer, lamb and turkey in the online auction. She said the students depend upon the auction to help them regain some of the expenses they have already invested for the purchase of their animal, feed and pen rent, but also to help seniors with college and technical school expenses as they pursue post-secondary goals in the fall.
“If anyone can possibly help out a little, even just bidding on someone’s rabbits or their project or even if you want to go big and bid on someone’s steer, it will help so much,” Moynihand said. “These kids have been devastated by what happened, especially the seniors.
Musterman also hopes the community will find ways to support the students by bidding on their projects. She said she knows times are hard right now for many people, and if they can’t buy an animal, they can support family members and students involved in the auction by donating through an add-on process. Giving as much as $5 or $10 helps, she said.
