Note: The in-person graduation ceremonies have been rescheduled for June 12-14 – Spring ISD announces new June dates for outdoor graduation ceremonies to celebrate its Class of 2020
Spring ISD is planning two graduation ceremonies to celebrate its Class of 2020 accomplishments – a virtual one in June and an in-person ceremony at the end of July.
“We heard loud and clear from our families that they wanted the opportunity for the graduates to walk across the stage even if that was later this year, so we are going to do our best to make that happen,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Rodney E. Watson. “By planning for both a virtual ceremony and an in-person ceremony, we’re hoping to give our Class of 2020 an experience that is as close to the traditional graduation experience as possible during this unprecedented time. We want to recognize and celebrate them because they are truly a remarkable group of young people.”
Under the district’s plan, the Class of 2020 will have a virtual graduation on Saturday, June 6, 2020, following this schedule:
- 9 a.m. Dekaney High School
- 11:30 a.m. Spring Early College Academy
- 2 p.m. Westfield High School
- 4:30 p.m. Spring High School
- 7 p.m. Carl Wunsche Sr. High School
The virtual ceremony will include all the usual pomp and circumstance with speeches and student roll call, using an online platform that will allow graduates, families and friends to participate safely from their homes amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Then, the week of July 27-31, the district is planning to host in-person graduation ceremonies at the Spring ISD Planet Ford Stadium each evening at 7 p.m., using the schedule below:
- Monday, July 27 – Dekaney High School
- Tuesday, July 28 – Spring Early College Academy
- Wednesday, July 29 – Westfield High School
- Thursday, July 30 – Spring High School
- Friday, July 31 – Carl Wunsche Sr. High School
Again, these graduation ceremonies would feature all of the usual tradition with special remarks and speeches from key representatives from the district and each school, including the superintendent, board president, principal, as well as the campus valedictorian and salutatorian.
An additional benefit of holding the in-person ceremony at the end of July is that the summer graduates would be able to take the stage with their classmates, rather than in a separate ceremony.
“This will be an opportunity to bring each class together in a special way,” Watson said. “Our Planet Ford Stadium is the perfect venue to host these ceremonies because it’s a beautiful facility with lots of space to celebrate our graduates.”
