HOUSTON – April 17, 2020 – Keeping in line with the order issued on Friday by Texas Gov. Abbott, Spring ISD schools will remain closed and offer remote learning through the end of the 2019-20 school year.
The governor had previously ordered schools closed until May 4, but during a Friday press conference, Abbott said health officials had recommended that schools remain closed.
“While we miss instructing and supporting our students in person, we’re grateful for the state’s leadership in making health and safety a priority for our entire community,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Rodney E. Watson. “We are looking forward to continuing with our remote learning plan, which we’re calling Empowered Learning At-Home 2.0, and giving our students all the tools they need to finish out the school year successfully.”
Over the past several weeks, the district has been loaning Chromebooks to secondary students who need technology and will be loaning Chromebooks to 4th and 5th graders and all Special Education students this Saturday. All students will be completing three Project-Based Learning plans, designed for their specific grade level, to fulfill all of their requirements by the end of the school year.
The district is also making plans to host virtual graduation ceremonies for its Class of 2020 on June 6, with the goal of offering in-person ceremonies, if public health conditions permit, at the district’s Planet Ford Stadium at the end of July.
“I’m incredibly proud of all of our students, and especially our seniors, as they continue to stay focused on learning amid these challenging circumstances,” Watson said. “As a district, we’re grateful for everyone’s support.”
