HOUSTON – June 4, 2020 – A record number of Spring ISD students this year received scholarships to help pursue their educational and career goals, thanks to the Spring ISD Career and Technology Advisory Board, which awarded $20,000 — the most money ever.
“The advisory board very much appreciates our business partners and supporters from the community for stepping up and helping us meet the target of providing 20 scholarships this year, despite the crisis of the pandemic in our society,” said Seth Sharr, the president of the CTE Advisory Board.
Sharr said the goal of 20 scholarships was to align with this year’s CTE Advisory Board theme: “2020 Vision with CTE, Our Future is Clear!” Although the group had to cancel its annual spring scholarship luncheon on account of the closures related to COVID-19, Sharr said the group stayed focused on making sure the district’s CTE students still received the funds.
The district’s CTE program is one of the district’s jewels, offering students a wide variety of pathways to explore, develop their interests and achieve industry certifications to help them be successful in a competitive economy.
“Our vision for CTE is to create a program that meets the needs of all of our students, no matter their interests, and give them a solid foundation for college and careers,” said CTE Director Cynthia Williams. “Over the past five years, under the leadership of our superintendent and Board of Trustees, we’ve really invested in expanding the number of choices for our students, and also ensuring access to those classes across the district.”
Some of the pathways offered include Oil and Gas, Construction Management, Auto Technology, Engineering and Health Sciences – all industries that seek well-trained people for high-paying jobs. Many of this year’s scholarship recipients credited their CTE experience for shaping their interests and goals. Below is the complete list of 2020 CTE $1,000 scholarship winners:
