HOUSTON – Nov. 3, 2020 – Families who have students in the fifth and eighth grades are invited to learn more about the district’s schools of choice with virtual showcase events the week of Nov. 10 – 12.
The special online meetings will offer additional information about each school as well as answer any questions parents may have about the online application, which opened on Nov. 2.
“We know families have a lot going on right now so we’re trying to make it as easy as possible to apply to our schools of choice,” Chief of Innovation and Equity Dr. Lupita Hinojosa. “Parents can apply to multiple programs with the same application to save time. All applications submitted by the deadline of Dec. 18 will be entered into the Phase One review to determine eligibility. Those eligible students then will be notified by late January that they are moving onto Phase Two review that may involve an audition and/or interview at some campuses.”
In addition to the showcase events, the district is planning in-person sessions throughout December to assist any families who need help with the application process. For more information, please visit www.springisd.org/choice and click on a school for more details.
“We know parents may have questions about our different schools of choice so we do hope they’ll join us for these virtual showcase events,” Hinojosa said. “All of the schools will offer detailed information in English and Spanish about their programs, the application process and next steps.”
Spring ISD currently has five schools of choice, two at the middle school level and three at the high school level, including a new one sdet to debut at Dekaney High School. The Pathways in Technology Early College High School or P-TECH at Dekaney will offer students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Science degree while still enjoying a comprehensive high school experience. Key areas of study will include computer programming, coding, animation and gaming.
“We’re especially excited about being able to offer this new school of choice at Dekaney High School. The programming is second-to-none and will give our students a definite advantage in the competitive tech and computer science fields,” Hinojosa said. “We’re already seeing a lot of interest from our families in this option.”
