A major component of the 2022 Bond, approved by voters in November 2022, is aimed at improving safety and security at every campus in Spring ISD. As a part of an ongoing effort to ensure that all students and staff have a safe environment to learn and work, Spring ISD is implementing multiple additions and upgrades to the district’s Safety Systems.
“Safety and security is always a top priority for Spring ISD, from the moment our students step on a school bus in the morning to the second they leave the campus in the afternoon,” Superintendent Dr. Lupita HInojosa said. “While our teams work every single day to continue to improve safety, we are fortunate to have funding through our 2022 Bond to take massive steps – including camera upgrades, fence improvements, and other system-wide improvements – that will greatly increase our emergency readiness.”
One of the biggest components of the bond’s safety system project is to increase camera coverage and upgrade the video management system. The new cameras will feature AI-assisted technology and upgraded lenses. The new video management system and camera features will increase the efficiency of monitoring and reviewing camera footage. Campuses will receive additional cameras and views increasing the density of camera coverage.
“On the administrator side at the campus level, they’re going to see better views around campus and better camera access with easier ways to pull footage,” Cindy Adams, Facility Safety Manager with Spring ISD, said. “If they’re looking for an incident, if something was stolen, or if there was an altercation with students, the process of finding and pulling those clips would be much more efficient.”
The first phase of the project includes Westfield High School, The School for International Studies at Bammel, Meyer Elementary School, and Richey Academy – these campuses should see the upgrades during the 2024-25 school year, with a rollout in phases of all campuses expected to finish in 2027.
Another improvement that will be installed district-wide during the 2024-25 school year is the video intercom system that will allow front office staff to greet visitors before allowing them into the main doors.
“I think the intercoms at the front doors are going to be a great help for the campuses because that’s going to allow them to see the person that’s coming in the building before they get inside,” Adams said. “They will be able to see if the person is carrying a weapon, or acting suspiciously, before ever allowing them through the front door.”
One project from the 2016 Bond is getting an expanded footprint in the 2022 Bond. Gunshot detection devices were installed previously in all high schools, and will now be expanded to all campuses, including middle and elementary schools. Other safety and security improvements include vape detection in all high schools and middle schools, as well as exterior alarms on buildings that would alert emergency officials to break-ins.
