When you pass by Spring High School, you might catch the unmistakable sound of the Great Green Marching Machine refining yet another award-winning performance. This fall, the band has continued its legacy of excellence, beginning with earning a superior rating at the UIL Region 33 Marching Contest—a tradition they have proudly upheld since 1989.
The band’s most recent achievement came on Nov. 9 at theUS Bands Southeast Texas Championship, held at Legacy Stadium, where they performed their 2024 production, N.Y…See. The performance featured an eclectic repertoire, including music from Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, YMusic, and The Ramones. Competing in Group Three, they earned first place and secured an impressive third-place overall finish. The band also received awards for Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance, and Outstanding Overall Effect.
“It’s really like a family, and being able to play in front of those great fans is awesome,” Senior Brass Captain Ian Zamora said. “Just seeing all of my friends and family succeed; it makes all of those long summer days worth it.”
Bringing these performances to life requires extensive planning and coordination, starting as early as November of the previous year. The students dedicate thousands of hours to perfecting every detail for just a few brief moments on stage and on the field. In those moments, they rely on their rigorous training to deliver unforgettable performances that showcase their determination and talent.
“I’m just so proud of those kids,” Band Director Jason Smith said. “It makes me emotional thinking about it. They’ve earned everything they receive, and they deserve all the recognition in the world.”
The band’s diversity is another cornerstone of its success. With members who come from all walks of life and from all around the world. They represent different social circles and ethnicities, and the diversity of the group is something everyone holds near and dear to their hearts. It’s a source of pride for the Great Green Marching Machine.
“Although we’re all very different and come from different backgrounds, we all have a common goal,” Senior Band President Connor Briscoe said. “We come from all around the world, and we just love each other, and I think that’s something really amazing.”
The Spring High School Band’s remarkable season is a celebration of their collective perseverance, talent, and shared vision. As they continue to raise the bar with each performance, the band embodies the true spirit of teamwork and passion, leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration for their school and community.
