At Hoyland Elementary School in Spring ISD, anticipation filled the air as students and staff packed the gym on Wednesday morning, eagerly awaiting principal Sarahdia Johnson’s arrival. The moment she stepped inside, a wave of cheers and applause erupted, with shouts of “Congratulations!” echoing throughout the room—a true reflection of the admiration and pride her school community holds for her.
Johnson was surprised as the Elementary Principal of the Year in Spring ISD, praised for her commitment to instructional excellence, coaching and feedback, and support for her teachers.
Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa joined in the celebration, recognizing the collective efforts that contributed to this achievement.
“Congratulations to the entire Hoyland Elementary family,” Hinojosa said. “Under Principal Johnson’s outstanding leadership, Hoyland has continued to inspire, innovate, and set the bar high. As she moves forward to represent Spring ISD in the Region 4 competition, we proudly stand behind her, knowing that her leadership reflects the very best of our district. This is not just a victory for Hoyland—it’s a moment of pride for all of Spring ISD, and we celebrate this achievement together!”
With her family and friends in attendance, Johnson expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing that her success is a reflection of the support and commitment of her staff and students.
“This school is my family,” Johnson said. “I want to thank all of the teachers for trusting me, I couldn’t have done it without this amazing staff and these amazing students.
Each year, the Principal of the Year honor is awarded to one elementary and one secondary principal, chosen based on campus performance data, observations, student achievement, and input from district leaders and community members. As a part of tradition, both winners were surprised with the recognition at their respective schools.
“Principal Johnson exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional leader,” said Spring ISD Assistant Superintendent Jason Davila. “Her passion and energy are contagious, creating a school culture where students and staff feel supported, motivated, and empowered to succeed. Each day, she leads with purpose—walking the halls, stepping into classrooms, and ensuring that both teachers and students have what they need to thrive.”
Davila says Johnson not only holds high expectations for both students and staff– but she does so with an unwaveringly positive attitude and a smile that brightens the campus.
“Principal Johnson’s dedication, resilience, and ability to inspire those around her make her truly deserving of the Elementary Principal of the year recognition. Hoyland Elementary is stronger because of her leadership, and Spring ISD is fortunate to have her as a guiding force in our district,” Davila said.
Meanwhile, at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School—recently honored as the #1 Gold Ribbon High School in all of Houston—Dr. Alfred James walked into what he thought was a routine meeting, only to be met with a roaring crowd. To his surprise, his wife and Spring ISD administrators were already there, ready to celebrate his well-deserved recognition as Secondary Principal of the Year.
It’s an honor,” James said through a few tears. “I know a lot of principals that are worthy of it and we have a lot of principals who are deserving of it. We have a great team here at Wunsche and I couldn’t have done it without them. I am truly honored and grateful for this opportunity.”
Spring ISD Assistant Superintendent Tracey Walker was also on hand during the surprise announcement, saying she’s proud that James received the honor.
“Under his dedicated leadership, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School has become a thriving learning community where students are inspired to reach their fullest potential,” Walker said. “Dr. James’s unwavering commitment to educational excellence, innovative programs, and fostering an inclusive environment has transformed the lives of countless students and educators alike. His vision and passion for education truly make a difference every day.”
Spring ISD Chief of Academics & School Leadership Dr. Kregg Cuellar emphasized the rigorous selection process for the Principal of the Year award, which involves evaluating academic data, conducting campus observations, and gathering input from various stakeholders.
“Selecting a Principal of the Year is never an easy task, as we have so many dedicated and exceptional leaders in our district,” Cuellar said. “However, both Principal Johnson and Dr. James have demonstrated exemplary leadership, and a commitment to excellence that is directly aligned to the Spring ISD leadership definition that exemplifies being outcome driven, service oriented, and relationship centered.”
Each year, the district selects one elementary and one secondary principal for this distinguished honor. Finalists are chosen based on leadership effectiveness, student academic performance, and engagement with their school community. Johnson and James will now represent Spring ISD in the Region 4 competition and will also be celebrated at the district’s annual Employee Recognition Banquet in the spring.
