With a sense of anticipation in the air, nearly 300 young men from across Spring ISD stepped into Dekaney High School for the district’s 7th annual Boys’ Empowerment Summit. Eyes filled with curiosity and ambition, they arrived ready to seize an opportunity that could shape their future.
Hosted by the district’s Family and Community Engagement Department, the summit brought together middle and high school students for a day of mentorship, meaningful discussions, and engaging activities aimed at creating personal and academic success.
The event featured a lineup of speakers and workshops tailored to address key aspects of personal growth and development. Students engaged in candid conversations about social and emotional development, professionalism and relationships, gaining valuable information into navigating social and emotional challenges.
One of the key speakers at the event was Sterling Mark, Chief Empowerment Officer of Sterling Empowerment. His personal journey was one of triumph and misstep. Despite facing tough circumstances, Mark refused to let them define his future. It was this resilient, no-quit attitude that he aimed to instill in the young men in the Star Theater
“This type of event can truly be transformative for a young man,” Mark said. “It is so imperative that we pour into them because they are our future, and as long as we can teach them basic things like respect, discipline, and to never give up, then I believe we can help provide a better future for everyone.”
The significance of events like this extends beyond just inspiration–it provides an opportunity for mentorship for those students who may not otherwise have it in their daily lives. Seeing positive male role models striving towards their goals is crucial for these young men’s development. Tranita Carroll, Executive Director Family and Community Engagement echoed.
“This is such a meaningful event because those students get a chance to see an example of what they can become,” Carroll said. “It is not about how you start in life, it’s how you finish. And these kids can see that in action.”
In addition to the impactful speeches, the event featured a series of workshops designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge. Topics ranged from how to communicate professionally, to the value of saying no to drugs, and several more workshops that could make the defining difference in a young man’s life.
“We’ve learned a lot about leadership and just making sure we know to think before we act,” Westfield High School sophomore Jalen Jones said. “I learned a lot from the workshops, and the speakers were being real and honest about what it takes to be a leader. So that really helped me.”
Beyond the workshops and discussions, students enjoyed lively step and dance performances from several prominent fraternities, which included a special lunch that doubled as a lesson in etiquette and formal dining habits. As a special takeaway, all participants received t-shirts and swag bags filled with essential items, serving as souvenirs and reminders of the empowering messages shared throughout the event.
As the 2025 Boys’ Empowerment and Leadership Summit came to a close, one thing was certain: The future looks brighter when young men are empowered to see their own potential. Each moment was a chance to grow, learn, and develop key skills that the young men can carry with them for the rest of their lives. No matter what’s happened in their pasts, they won’t let it stop them from creating a bright future.
