What seemed like just another Saturday in April turned into an unforgettable morning for 60 senior girls in Spring ISD, who had the opportunity to find their dream prom dress—completely free of charge. Now in its second year, the Graceful Gowns Initiative once again brought joy, confidence, and a sense of empowerment to students preparing for one of the most significant milestones of their high school journey—prom night.
Under the leadership of co-founder Kelly P. Hodges, who also serves as a trustee for Spring ISD, the Graceful Gowns Initiative curated a beautiful collection of dresses, accessories, and beauty items to support students. Hodges emphasized that the effort is more than fashion—about making an impact.
“The goal is for every young lady attending the event to have a dress and look beautiful that night,” Hodges stated, inviting the community to participate in this effort. “I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to support and contribute to this incredible initiative. As we look to expand this event to even more communities, [the community’s] generosity will help us continue providing students with not just beautiful dresses, beauty supplies, and jewelry—but with confidence, joy, and unforgettable memories.”
Held at the Spring ISD Family and Community Engagement Center, the event offered students a boutique-style shopping experience. The building was vibrant and filled with light, and students had the chance to stroll through aisles of elegant gowns and accessories to wear on their big night.
But that wasn’t all—they also received beauty items, jewelry, enjoyed a delicious lunch, attended professional makeup and hair sessions, and even had the chance to win exciting prizes—making the day a true celebration of confidence, style, and sisterhood.
For Adela Maldonado, a Carl Wunsche Sr. High School senior, this special event gave her the chance to attend prom, feel beautiful, and gain confidence in herself.
“This event makes me so happy because it gives us an opportunity we might not otherwise have—and it’s completely free,” Maldonado said with a smile.
But the students weren’t the only ones who got to enjoy the magic of the day—their mothers were also there, proudly standing by their daughters’ sides.
For Brittaney Powell, mother of Dekaney High School senior Ja’Nae Burton, this event holds a deeply special place in her heart. As a mother who never had the chance to attend prom herself, watching her daughter live out this experience is incredibly meaningful. It’s a dream they’ve shared and worked toward together for nearly 12 years, making this moment all the more unforgettable.
“I love that I had the opportunity to help my daughter pick out her dress,” Powell shared. “It’s something I never got to do, so being part of this with her means the world to me.”
Tranita Carroll, Spring ISD Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement, emphasized that the event didn’t just fill the hearts of students—it touched their families as well by offering accessible prom resources.
“It’s about lifting up our students and their families—making sure they feel supported, celebrated, and confident as they create memories that will last a lifetime, without the added stress of financial barriers,” Carroll said.
During the event, each participant received a free formal gown, shoes, jewelry, and a meaningful experience that fostered personal growth, self-esteem, and a sense of community. Volunteers and mentors worked one-on-one with the students, helping them feel valued, seen, and ready to shine at this milestone event.
This effort reflects the broader mission of Spring ISD and its partners—to remove obstacles, build confidence, and help students thrive both academically and personally. The Graceful Gowns initiative serves as a model of what can be achieved through collaboration, and community-driven support.
