Cuando los estudiantes de último año de la Escuela Secundaria Dekaney cruzaron el escenario durante las ceremonias de graduación el viernes 2 de junio en el estadio Planet Ford, de hecho fue un evento histórico en sus propias vidas, pero fueron parte de un momento aún más grande en la historia de la escuela. Las valedictorian y salutatorian de su clase fueron las primeras mujeres afroamericanas en la historia de la escuela en lograr simultáneamente sus clasificaciones.
