HOUSTON – Dec. 18, 2015 – Children visiting the Dekaney High School found a campus transformed into a “Winter Wonderland,” complete with snow. Over twenty holiday-themed exhibits and stations provided gifts and literacy-based activities for the families attending the evening event.
Promoting literacy was the major focus of the evening event. Khechara Bradford, Spring ISD Director of Literacy, who was dressed as a Elsa, made sure that each child had the opportunity to receive a gift-wrapped, brand-new book.
Additionally, a choir from Twin Creeks Middle School performed seasonal music, as parents and children moved about the school’s cafeteria. Children were able to participate in reading and writing activities and create holiday cards, bookmarks and ornaments. The Spring ISD Transportation, Child Nutrition and Police Departments hosted exhibits while Emmy, the department’s police dog, happily received a multitude of pats on the head from the children as they passed by. Outside, children were able to play in fresh snow. Santa, a few elves and other book characters also made appearances.
The event, including the book giveaway, was made possible through the Give the Gift of Reading Campaign sponsored by the Spring ISD Education Foundation and generous donations from the Spring community.
