HOUSTON – Feb. 28, 2017 – Carl Wunsche Sr. High School will observe its 10th Anniversary on March 8 with members of the Wunsche family, the community, students, parents, former principals and alumni celebrating the school’s history and honoring the legacy of its namesake, Carl Wunsche Sr.

In lieu of performances, students will participate in an “Academy Showcase,” sharing the skills they are learning in the school’s career pathways as part of their Wunsche experience. Culinary students are preparing the “lite bites” for the event, and students from the criminal justice program will participate in the presentation of colors as well as escort distinguished guests. Students in the robotics program will show off their robot, and engineering students will showcase their Skills USA competition piece, while medical students present from a variety of pathways, including EMT, nursing, pharmacy tech, and veterinary medicine.

“At our 10-year mark, we will honor the dedication that elevated Wunsche to a nationally recognized leader among career academies. Wunsche remains steadfast in its commitment to provide opportunities for all kids to grow, excel and leave high school prepared to face their futures,” said Bob Thompson, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School principal.

That legacy includes Spring ISD alumni and the first Miss Wunsche, Kiara Davis. She will serve as the mistress of ceremonies and will also speak on her experience at Wunsche and her chosen career path — she is currently employed as a teacher with the Spring ISD. In addition, guests will hear remarks from Spring ISD Board President Dr. Deborah Jensen and Superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson; several other alumni will be present to share their experiences and the value of attending Wunsche.

The Wunsche family donated 13 acres to Spring ISD in 1937 for a new school, with the stipulation that it be named for their ancestor, Carl Wunsche Sr. In 1939, it was the first school constructed after Spring ISD was formed in 1935. In August 2006, the current 273,000-square-foot building opened on the site, replacing the older building with not only a new school, but also a new, innovative approach to college and career readiness.

A most worthy namesake, Carl Wunsche Sr. was a German immigrant in the Spring area in the mid 1800s who did much toward the development of the area and exemplified Spring’s early settlers.
