HOUSTON – May 8, 2017 – Spring ISD wrapped up its first-ever Smart Kid Cool Car giveaway on Sunday, May 7 with a special event announcing Angela Ace Fontelera Alex, a Carl Wunsche Sr. High School senior, as the grand prize winner of a brand new Honda Civic donated by Honda of Spring.
“To the people who made this possible, I’m just really, really thankful and blessed, because there are some nice people here who are willing to help out a senior. I hope that their futures will also be blessed, because I know that they have been doing so many good things and serving others through their company. I’m glad that they are generous,” Alex said.
Alex plans to earn an associate degree in nursing at Lone Star College before attending the University of Texas Health to complete her bachelor’s degree. A member of the nursing program and Key Club at Wunsche, she will be graduating June 3 in the top five percent.
The Smart Kid Cool Car program was created in conjunction with Honda of Spring as a way to recognize Spring ISD students who are motivated academically and also active in service to the community, as demonstrated by maintaining a cumulative 2.5 GPA; passing all state-required End of Course exams; maintaining a 95 percent attendance rate during the year; completing 25 hours of volunteer service in the Spring community; having no out-of-school discipline infractions; and completing the required post-secondary planning assignments.
Seniors from five participating high schools – Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, Dekaney High School, Spring Early College Academy, Spring High School and Westfield High School were eligible for the program and 144 qualified to participate in the drawing.
“We believe in Spring ISD,” said Honda of Spring General Manager Chuck Jett. “They do a lot for our community, and we like to be a part of that, and with this program. It’s been a very good partnership, and we hope to do it for many years.” said General Manager Chuck Jett.
The Smart Kid Cool Car Announcement began at 3 p.m. at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School and included remarks, not only from Jett, but also Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. In addition, students and parents enjoyed games, cool giveaways and music by 97.9 The Box.
“I think it’s a true testament for what we know about our students here in Spring,” said Watson. “We have great students. Once again, we are only as strong as our community, and our community is only as strong as our school district. Today was a true testament of the community and the district working together.”
