HOUSTON – April 19, 2018 – School bus drivers from across the region competed Saturday in the annual Gulf Coast Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Roadeo Competition.
Spring ISD hosted the event at its Transportation Center on Richey Road. A total of 46 teams from Regions 4 and 6 – including 37 general education teams and nine special needs teams – competed for the opportunity to advance to the state level Roadeo conducted by the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation on June 23 in Corpus Christi.
Four Spring ISD drivers – Anita Robinson, Tai Payton-Rachal, Jaimie Martinez and Robin Coleman – competed in 10 driving events designed to test their skills and knowledge on how to safely load, unload and transport students. In addition, the drivers completed a written exam on rules of the road.
“This was a great event for our transportation team to host and be a part of,” said Transportation Director Keith Kaup. “This friendly competition reinforces our main mission, which is to get thousands of students to and from school safely every day.”
That focus on safe driving helped Spring ISD’s Robinson place third in Region 4, earning her a spot at the State Level Roadeo in June.
Nearly 300 Spring ISD bus drivers transport about 17,000 students each day, traveling a total of 2.9 million miles annually.
