HOUSTON – Jan. 15, 2019 – During the month of January, Spring Independent School District and school districts across the nation take time out to acknowledge and celebrate the local volunteers who serve as school board members.
“Our district benefits tremendously from the countless volunteer hours and responsibilities contributed by our board members,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. “Our Board was elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for more than 35,000 students across Spring ISD and serve as advocates for public education.”
Spring ISD board trustees are elected for rotating three-year terms and are empowered by the Texas Legislature to govern and manage the district’s schools. Although elected to numbered positions, trustees represent the district as a whole, not a specific geographical area. In addition, the board fulfills its responsibilities by establishing and setting objectives for the district’s strategic plan, adopting an annual budget based on the plan, establishing policies for the operation of the district and selecting a superintendent who serves as the chief executive officer of the district.
“I encourage the public to please take a moment to tell our school board members ‘thank you’ for caring about our children and giving so much to our community,” said Watson. “Let’s continue to support them and let them know that their dedicated service is recognized and truly appreciated. It’s more important than ever before that we all support public education so that today’s students are prepared to give back to the local community and become the leaders of tomorrow.”
The current seven-member board is comprised of the following trustees:
- President Rhonda Newhouse, Position 5
- Vice President Jana Gonzales, Position 7
- Secretary Donald Davis, Position 6
- Assistant Secretary Winford Adams Jr., Position 4
- Dr. Deborah Jensen, Position 1
- Chris A. Bell, Position 2
- Justine Durant, Position 3
