The Family and Community Engagement building is set to receive a new name and a major upgrade to its facilities. Thanks to the bond approved in 2022 and a unanimous vote by the school board in August, the building will be renamed in honor of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
The former YMCA building serves as the headquarters for the Family and Community Engagement department, offering a variety of programs designed to support students and their families. Among these are The VINE mentoring initiative, the Smart Start Early Learning program, and several others that strengthen community connections and enhance educational opportunities.
“It is with our profound gratitude that we make this tribute to her extraordinary legacy of service, dedication and love for her community,” Board of Trustees President Justine Durant said. “She was a tireless advocate for the people of this district.”
The ceremony welcomed a diverse group of government officials and community members, including members of congress, state representatives, and close friends of the late Congresswoman. Among the attendees were her husband of 51 years and other longtime supporters. The event served not only as a renaming ceremony but also as a heartfelt celebration of the Congresswoman’s tireless dedication to improving her community and creating a lasting positive impact.
“She got on our nerves a lot of the time,” Representative Senfronia Thompson said with a heartfelt smile, prompting a roar of laughter from the audience. “But you know at the end of the moment, you were so happy to support her. I want to thank God for sending people like her into our lives.”
Renovations, scheduled to begin in 2025, will encompass both interior and exterior updates. Interior upgrades will include new flooring, fresh paint, and modernized office spaces. Exterior plans involve a revamped pool house, enhanced parking, and updated pool facilities. Additionally, new security cameras and reinforced fencing will be installed to improve safety.
“This facility truly embodies all that the late great Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee stood for,” Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement Tranita Carroll said. “It is my hope that as we continue to do this important work we always honor her legacy.”
