More than 350 young women in grades 6-12 kicked off Women’s History Month on March 1 for the Spring ISD Girls’ Empowerment and Leadership Summit at Dekaney High School, an event dedicated to preparing them for success in college, careers, and leadership roles.
The summit, designed to equip participants with essential skills and confidence, featured a series of engaging workshops, inspiring keynote speakers, and valuable networking opportunities. In its seventh year, the district teamed up with the American Association of University Women to host the summit, which emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment, recognizing the contributions of trailblazing women throughout history and inspiring the next generation to break barriers and achieve their dreams.
Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa delivered a powerful, opening address where she shared her personal journey, recounting the challenges she faced growing up without knowing English and how she persevered by remaining focused on her goals.
“Keep the dream in your head and your heart—you can do it!,” Hinojosa said. “Here in Spring ISD, we are here to support your dream.”
Following the superintendent’s remarks, students were divided into groups and attended one of three specialized sessions focused on leadership, career readiness, and emotional support.
The event offered a diverse range of leadership-focused sessions designed to empower the young women in both their personal and professional growth. Sessions such as “Building Healthy Relationships,” “Smart Goals and Money Moves,” and “Social Media Expertise” provided valuable insights and practical strategies for success.
Experts led workshops on college admissions, scholarship applications, and career planning, equipping attendees with the tools to take meaningful steps toward their future. Leadership sessions focused on building confidence, mastering public speaking, and strengthening decision-making skills. Additionally, mental health professionals and peer mentors facilitated discussions on self-esteem, resilience, and stress management.
Through these engaging and informative sessions, participants gained essential skills to confidently navigate academic, career, and personal challenges.
According to Tranita Carroll, Spring ISD Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement and organizer of the event, the annual event is a testament to the power of mentorship and opportunity.
“We are here to remind every girl that she is smart, strong, and capable of anything she sets her mind to,” said Carroll. “The future is hers to shape!”
Beyond learning and growth, attendees enjoyed a fun-filled experience with entertainment and a 360 photo booth, capturing unforgettable moments with friends. Participants were treated to a delicious steak lunch, where they learned about table etiquette and manners. This aspect of the summit reinforced self-respect, confidence, and the importance of personal presentation.
This year’s Girls’ Empowerment and Leadership Summit expanded its reach this year by welcoming the district’s middle schools, providing young girls the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential leadership skills. Mycaylee Robinson, a 7th grade student from Wells Middle School, said she had a great time at the event, learning valuable lessons while having fun with her classmates, who were attending for the first time.
“I enjoyed the presentation on drug awareness; it was interesting and taught me a lot,” she said. “I had such a good time and cannot wait to come back next year!”
