It was a day of joyful disruption across six Spring ISD campuses as unsuspecting teachers were met with cheers, camera flashes and surprise visitors bearing life-changing news — they were each receiving a $2,500 check in recognition of their outstanding impact in the classroom.
The surprise classroom visits, part of the Honored Schools program—a national nonprofit that works in partnership with school communities to spotlight life-changing educators—celebrated six standout teachers from across the district: Kaitlyn Floyd of Bailey Middle School, James Moore of Roberson Middle School, Yolanda Merritt of Claughton Middle School, Andrew Stewart and Renisha Wiley of Spring Early College Academy, and Cinthya Ramirez of Northgate Crossing Elementary School.
Each honoree was caught completely off guard as representatives burst through the classroom doors, giant checks in hand, with their students erupting in celebration. Some laughed, some cried, and all shared in the genuine joy of the moment alongside the students whose lives they touch daily.
Reflecting on the emotional weight of the moment, Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa said the recognitions couldn’t have gone to more deserving individuals.
“It was a humbling experience that touched their hearts and validated the incredible work they do,” Hinojosa said. “The moment I saw the names of those teachers, I immediately said, ‘Yes!’ These are educators who make a lasting impact on the lives of our students every single day.”
As part of their award, each teacher received $2,000 to use on classroom resources through DonorsChoose, as well as a $500 Visa gift card for personal use. The Honored Schools program is designed to uplift teachers through the voices of their own students, families, and colleagues, who submit heartfelt stories nominating them for the recognition.
The initiative aims to shine a light on the work that teachers do every day—work that often goes far beyond academics. That spirit of celebration resonated throughout the district, and it was especially meaningful to those who helped bring the recognition to life.
Stefanie Cruz, managing director of Houston Loves Teachers, described the experience of honoring educators as a great honor and a catalyst for change.
“It’s a privilege to do this work. I love celebrating teachers, elevating their stories, and rallying Houston to stand with them,” Cruz said. “When we show up, even with something small, teachers light up. They feel seen, valued, and reminded that their work matters. These moments spark a movement where appreciation isn’t rare, it’s expected. And that’s exactly what our educators deserve.”
The moment also carried lasting meaning for the students, many of whom had submitted the stories that led to the honors. Watching their teachers be recognized showed them the power of gratitude and the profound difference one person can make.
Thanks to initiatives like these, Spring ISD teachers continue to be recognized for the difference they make—in the classroom, in the community, and in the lives of the students they serve.
