HOUSTON – Jan. 19, 2017 – Dr. Edward Roberson Middle School – a Math, Science and Fine Arts Academy in Spring ISD – will accept student applications for the 2017-18 school year Jan. 23-Feb. 24.
Current Spring ISD fifth-graders who are interested in applying may submit applications to their elementary school counselors. Applicants zoned to Spring ISD but not currently attending a Spring ISD elementary school, along with children of employees residing either inside or outside the district, may submit applications in person directly to Louise Shaw, Roberson Middle School registrar, or via email at lshaw@springisd.org. Applications can be downloaded and printed directly from the Roberson website, and copies will also be available at all Spring ISD elementary schools. Only complete applications submitted no later than Feb. 24 will be considered.
In outlining the recruitment process, Roberson’s principal, Tracey Walker, emphasized the importance of rigorous selection criteria. “This year, we have added some important steps to better assess each applicant’s desire to attend the academy, which will ensure students admitted to Roberson are successful,” Walker said. Interested students will be required to complete all phases of the application process, including those laid out below.
- First Phase – Records Review (Feb. 25-March 10, 2017)
- Second Phase – In-Person Interview, Audition and Teacher Recommendation (March 20-28, 2017)
- Final Phase – Selection by Random Lottery (April 13, 2017)
Additional information detailing the three phases of the process along with application forms can be found on the Roberson Middle School website at www.springisd.org/roberson.
Ten percent of the total available seats will be for siblings of current Roberson students and another 10 percent will be for children of district employees who meet entrance requirements. In order to determine who those students will be, two smaller lotteries will be held prior to the general lottery. Those not accepted during this process will have an opportunity to enter their name in the general random lottery with all other qualified students.
All application statuses – admitted or waitlisted – will be announced immediately after the live lottery, and an official decision notification will be issued to all students who applied.
Parents and students are invited to attend one of two informational meetings scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9 and Monday, Feb. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 1500 Southridge Rd. For more information, visit the website or call the campus at 281-891-7700.
