Spring Independent School District is partnering with Harris County to provide free COVID-19 rapid tests for students and staff, with the district receiving more than 2,000 rapid tests from county officials.
Officials are distributing 110,000 tests to school districts throughout the county in an effort to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
“In providing [these tests] to schools, it’s another source … for parents,” Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said. “It helps kids who come into contact with positive cases to return quickly to the classroom.”
Hidalgo announced the distribution of tests at a press conference at Booker Elementary School on Monday afternoon, where she appeared in the school’s library along with Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis as well as Spring ISD Police Chief Ken Culbreath.
The tests will be distributed to campuses throughout the district in the coming weeks.
“We will take these new testing kits and put them in our schools to try and support our families as much as possible,” Culbreath said. “We are asking our staff and students to continue to practice the processes we have in place, and these tests give us another tool.”
In addition, the district is partnering with Harris County Public Health to launch a testing and vaccination mega site at Planet Ford Stadium. Both students and staff as well as community members will have access to free testing as well as vaccination and boosters. More information can be found at CovidCheck.HCTX.net.
