At the heart of Spring ISD, a beautiful project that represents the diversity and rich culture of the district has been woven. For the first time in the 90-year district’s history, the first Mariachi group in the history of Spring ISD has been formed. Demonstrating that music is a universal language that transcends language barriers and touches the hearts of human beings regardless of their origin.
That is why the formation of this Mariachi group touches hearts and is a pioneering representative of the broad diversity.
Under the direction of Director JD Guzman is a two-time Grammy Award-winning Signature School Educator who has served the Spring ISD for seventeen years as a master class lecturer, and private instructor, and eight years as Director of Percussion and Jazz at Spring High School.
His passion for music extends across multiple genres, and his ability to inspire students is evident in the energy and dedication he brings to every program he leads. Now, as he takes on the role of launching the district’s first mariachi ensemble, his deep appreciation for culture and musical excellence is shaping a program that will not only teach students technical skills but also instill pride in their heritage. With his leadership, the mariachi band is poised to become a staple of both the school and the community, fostering a new generation of talented musicians who carry forward this rich tradition.
The launch of the mariachi program has allowed students to develop musical skills, build confidence, and foster teamwork, all while immersing themselves in a cultural legacy that has been passed down for centuries.
“One student’s reaction to putting on the uniform for the first time left a lasting impact. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, ‘Sir, I’ve never felt so proud wearing a uniform.’ I didn’t realize how much this would mean to them until that moment,” recalled Mr. Guzman
And it’s not just the students who feel the significance—parents and administrators have been deeply moved as well. “When we played our first performance at the school board meeting, I saw parents with tears in their eyes. And Dr. Hinojosa’s reaction was unforgettable. In my 20 years of teaching, I’ve never seen a response like that in fine arts. That moment will stay with me forever.”
For Spring ISD’s Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, this project holds special significance, she deeply values diversity and understands the power of cultural representation in education. She has been a strong advocate for initiatives that honor the backgrounds and traditions of our students, ensuring that every child feels seen, heard, and celebrated.
“Mariachi León is more than just a music program; it is a celebration of culture, language, tradition, and student achievement,” said Hinojosa. “Through this program, our students not only develop musical skills but also a deep sense of understanding and pride in the Hispanic heritage and community.”
Recognizing that music is more than just an art form—it is a bridge that connects generations and communities—Hinojosa has championed this program as a way to preserve heritage, instill pride, and create meaningful opportunities for students. Her leadership reflects a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that our schools embrace and uplift the rich cultural tapestry that makes our district so unique.
“Our district is committed to providing enriching choices and opportunities for all students, and Mariachi León is a shining example of that commitment,” stated Hinojosa. “This program fosters talent, discipline, and cultural appreciation, all while building confidence and school spirit.”
The vision for the mariachi program is to grow into its entity, with dedicated classes, additional instructors, and even multiple bands that could perform across the country.
For now, the students are embracing every opportunity to learn, rehearse, and share their passion. “I tell them, if you play an instrument or sing, come visit. Let’s see what you have to offer,” said Guzman.
Thanks to the dedication of our students, the passion of our educators, and the support of our district leadership, mariachi is now an exciting and permanent part of our schools. The program is already changing lives, instilling pride, and bringing people together through the universal language of music.
