Spring ISD administrators, Board of Trustees, staff and community volunteers gathered at Momentum High School on Saturday morning for the district’s annual Success Walk, an outreach event designed to connect families with resources and highlight the importance of attending school every day.
The Success Walk is part of the district’s EVERYday Counts, Attendance Matters campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about the connection between daily attendance and long-term student achievement. This year’s program featured a districtwide roll call led by LaTracy Harris, interim chief of academics. Assistant superintendents, principals and campus leaders joined in person and virtually to represent their feeder patterns.
Superintendent Kregg Cuellar emphasized the importance of daily attendance as a foundation for student achievement.
“Students can’t learn if they’re not in class,” Cuellar said. “We want to emphasize the importance of being on time and present every day so they can take advantage of all the opportunities Spring ISD has to offer.”
Spring ISD Board Secretary Kelly P. Hodges addressed volunteers on behalf of the board.
“As a board, we believe our greatest resource is our students,” Hodges said. “To reach their full potential, they must be in class, because every day truly counts. Spring ISD is your partner, and we are walking alongside our families, ready with the resources and support they need to help every child thrive.”
Momentum High School Principal Ayesha Ahmad-Burriss also welcomed the crowd and stressed the critical role that attendance plays in shaping a student’s future.
“Attendance is the foundation of success,” Ahmad-Burriss said. “From kindergarten onward, showing up every day makes the difference between struggle and achievement. Research tells us that students who miss too many days often fall behind, and that gap widens all the way through high school.”
Following the kickoff, volunteers canvassed neighborhoods across the district, knocking on doors and connecting directly with families. Volunteers also ran a phone bank to reach more households across the district. Families received information about district resources including transportation, free meals, after-school programs, child care and personalized learning options.
Spring ISD board members Deborah Jensen and Winford Adams Jr., along with Cuellar and members of the Spring ISD Leadership Team, also left the kickoff to visit several homes to meet with students and encourage them to return to school.
Cuellar said the excitement across campuses reflected the strength of the district’s unity.
“I love it, because we are a community of one,” he said. “We’re one family, one team, and when we come together in unity, our purpose is clear — serving every single child.”
