March is Women’s Month–a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and limitless potential of women and girls across Spring ISD. This month, we celebrate the transformative role of education in shaping the future of young women.
A remarkable example of this transformation is the journey of Valeria Ramirez, a fourth-grade student at Beneke Elementary School. Valeria stepped into her school in the United States for the very first time two years ago. As a recent immigrant, she was filled with nervous anticipation as she faced the challenges of adjusting to a new culture, language, and environment. Fast forward to today, Valeria’s journey stands as a shining example of resilience, opportunity, and the life-changing influence of education.
“What I like the most about my school is the support from my teachers and classmates,” said Valeria. “Even though I was new, they were always there to help me and always believed in me while I’m learning English.”
Spring ISD has played an essential role in Valeria’s growth by providing access to English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and bilingual education support. These resources have been instrumental in helping her develop both academically and socially. Through the Multilingual Department, educators are equipped with training and support, including coaching and modeling by Emergent Bilingual Specialists, ensuring they are prepared to meet the needs of bilingual and ESL students.
Beneke principal Julie Smith noted that the school is home to a diverse student body and staff, and that building strong relationships is key to ensuring all students feel supported. The school prioritizes creating a welcoming environment for students and families navigating a new educational system, offering the tools they need to thrive.
“Valeria takes on every challenge with courage and a heart full of determination. Even when things don’t go her way, she never gives up—she grows and comes back stronger,” said Smith. “At Beneke, we believe in lifting our students and families up. With the support of our amazing bilingual team and Emergent Bilingual Specialist, we make sure our students feel seen, supported, and inspired to thrive—especially those who are just beginning their journey in a new country.”
Josh Grant, a bilingual teacher at Beneke, has been a vital part of this mission. Now in his fifth year of teaching at Beneke, Grant continues to exemplify dedication and excellence in his field.
“The bilingual program has given Valeria confidence to continue to grow in her Spanish speaking, reading, writing and listening abilities while simultaneously growing her English abilities,” said Grant. “She has been able to focus her academic studies in the classroom reading the units in Spanish, and grow her English in Social Studies and her fine arts classes.”
With encouragement from her school community, Valeria has also participated in extracurricular activities, including the district’s Spanish Spelling Bee, a competition designed to celebrate linguistic diversity and academic excellence. With countless hours of preparation and unwavering determination, Valeria recently clinched first place in the competition, becoming a source of pride for her school and family.
Valeria’s mother, Elsy Pacheco, expressed her admiration for her daughter’s accomplishments.
“Both my husband and I are very impressed with how far she has come,” said Pacheco. “This is a big win, especially since she is navigating a new country and culture.”
Currently, Valeria is thriving not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Her teachers say she has become a mentor to other newly arrived students by encouraging them to embrace their own journeys and reminding them that success is within reach.
As she prepares for the transition to middle school, Ramirez carries with her the lessons of perseverance and the continued support of her educational community. Her story illustrates the positive outcomes that result when schools, families, and communities collaborate to nurture student success.
Valeria’s journey is just beginning, but her accomplishments already speak volumes about what’s possible when schools, families, and communities come together to support their students. She is not just excelling; she’s paving the way for others to follow.
During National Women’s Month, we honor girls like Valeria—young leaders who inspire us with their strength and perseverance.
